Twitter Character Limit — Everything You Need to Know

Twitter (now X) allows 280 characters per tweet for standard free accounts. This limit was doubled from the original 140 characters back in November 2017. X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters, essentially allowing full blog posts in a single tweet.

The character count includes spaces, punctuation, emojis, and line breaks — everything you type counts. The only exception is @mentions at the start of a reply, which are excluded from the count.

Do URLs Count as Characters on Twitter?

Yes, but not their full length. Twitter automatically wraps every URL — regardless of how short or long it is — through its t.co shortener, and every shortened link counts as exactly 23 characters. This means a 5-character URL and a 200-character URL both cost you the same 23 characters.

So if your tweet has one link in it, you effectively have 280 − 23 = 257 characters for your actual text.

Do Emojis Count as Characters?

Most emojis count as 2 characters on Twitter. This is because emojis use Unicode code points outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, which Twitter counts as 2 units. A few simpler emoji (like ©, ®, ™) count as just 1 character. If you're heavy on emojis, this tool will give you an accurate real-time count.

Tips for Staying Within 280 Characters

  • Cut filler words — "I think that" and "basically" can almost always be removed
  • Use abbreviations — "w/" for "with", "bc" for "because", "&" for "and"
  • Split into a thread — if it's longer than 280, use our Thread Generator
  • Remove redundant phrases — "in order to" → "to", "at this point in time" → "now"
  • Shorten your link — Twitter counts every URL as 23 chars anyway, so URL length doesn't matter
